Elbe Heath Tour (Elbe-Heide-Tour)

The region between the Elbe river and the heath country was shaped during the Ice Ages. Following the Weichselian glaciation, tremendous amounts of sand were deposited when the ice melted. Over the course of time, the sand formed dunes many meters high and covered primarily with heather. At the beginning of the 18th century, pines were planted in this landscape based on nutrient-poor soil and the heath disappeared. After a catastrophic forest fire in 1975, the burned areas near Nemitz developed into a large heath area. Today, the Nemitz Heath has been designated again and again as a bird sanctuary area and is significant with regard to international species protection. The House in the Nemitz Heath between Trebel and Nemitz is the ideal starting point for a side trip though the blooming heath.
